The Window of Tolerance: Navigating Your Capacity

The "Window of Tolerance" is a term used to describe the zone where we can function and thrive. When you are within your window, you can process emotions and handle stress effectively.

Hyper-arousal vs. Hypo-arousal

  • Hyper-arousal (The "High" Road): This is the "Fight or Flight" response. You feel jumpy, angry, or overwhelmed. Your heart races, and your thoughts spin.

  • Hypo-arousal (The "Low" Road): This is the "Freeze" response. You feel numb, disconnected, or "spaced out." It can feel like being underwater or unable to move.

Widening the Window

The goal isn't to stay in the window 100% of the time—that’s impossible. The goal is to notice when you are drifting toward the edges. If you feel "too high," use calming, downward-regulating breaths (long exhales). If you feel "too low," use upward-regulating movement (stretching, stomping your feet, or bright music) to bring your system back online.
