Finding Your Anchors: Building Your Safety Toolkit

An "anchor" is anything that makes you feel a little more solid when the world feels shaky. Anchors can be external (a person, a pet, a specific room) or internal (a memory, a mantra, a rhythmic breath).

Relational Anchors

Community is a vital part of healing. An anchor might be a friend who listens without judging, or a support group like TEAO Canada where your experience is validated. Sometimes, even the "digital presence" of a community can act as an anchor, reminding you that you are not alone in your journey.

Transitional Objects

In trauma work, we often use objects to ground us. A smooth stone in your pocket, a heavy blanket, or a specific piece of jewelry can act as a physical anchor. When you touch these objects, they remind you of your intention to stay present and safe.
